Model: Anson Leung
Chair : Antique-Rose Velvet, Button-Backed Cocktail Chair
At 8am on a bright Thursday morning, we met in the grounds of Benrath Schloss to shoot the Antique-rose velvet, button-backed, cocktail chair. We had many crazy ideas, some that would work and some that were just experiments, but on such a clear morning, with hardly anyone in sight, we had lots of opportunity to try every idea that occurred to us.
When we approached our model, Hong Kong born Editor, Anson, to come and do the shoot for us, the first thing she said was; 'my face is too round and in Asia I would not be considered pretty.' I think we can all agree her beauty is universal. And her personality lit up our shoot, there was no warm-up time, Anson arrived ready to go, completely professional, as soon as we asked her to sit in the chair she had an immediate connection with the camera.
It's unusual for there not to be a single person in the grounds and although we were not alone, we had no difficulty lining up shots that made it look as if we were the only ones there.
I love anachronisms and images that look classic but with quirks or talking points - just like my chairs. Tim Walker, Grace Coddington and campaigns by brands rooted in craftsmanship such as Mulberry, Burberry and Olivia Von Halle, all served as inspiration.
We had strange and whimsical headdresses, swimming hats and goggles, sky-high heels and a bevvy of bizarre props. Anson was happy to dive right in...
We wanted Anson to be a kind of classical princess with a modern energy, so we asked her to blow bubble gum to offset the otherwise bridal-look of the shoot. The day before the shoot, I said to Anson, 'You can blow bubbles right?'
'Can you learn?'
So two hours and four packs of bubble gum later, Anson was blowing bubbles that would make any bored teenager proud.
The grounds of Benrath Schloss are full of tree-lined avenues, manicured flower beds, and the long Capability Brown-style lake that adds perfect proportion to views of the palace from a distance.
One of our favourite moments on this shoot was when a little old man, out on his morning walk, asked if we were shooting for Vogue! He then showed such interest in what we were doing and even asked if he could sit in the chair. It was heart warming.
Our experienced photographer is Sabina Woller of Brown Leather Book, who worked with me on our last shoot in the living room of my apartment. We had so much fun that day and were so excited to team-up again to be creative and make something we could both be proud of.
So keep you eyes peeled on our Instagram and Facebook account, as well as our Lookbook, to see the final pictures from the shoot!
